Both Costa Rican colones, or United States dollars are accepted, however businesses will generally charge a higher exchange rate than the bank and will most likely give change in local colones.

Credit cards are also generally accepted in most places, it is good to always have some cash on you at all times in the event cards are not accepted.

Local currency can also be taken out with your debit/bank card for a small fee and you will be charged the banks exchange rate when doing this.
